A collection of micro-short films curated and executively produced by Kyle Borg. This project is ongoing and exists to showcase the talent and styles of artists residing in the UK. So far, four films have already been shot under the project, and many more are yet to come.

It all started with a brief.

The Mirror Self Project came about from a written brief made by Kyle Borg in the winter of 2020. The written brief is available for anybody to read and the project is open to those who would like to partake in making a film based on the brief. The aims of the project are:

  • To provide a framework for creatives to exhibit and refine their existing talents, styles and interests

  • To produce work that confronts our understanding of the present through creative depictions of undesirable futures

  • Record and preserve a collection of creative works made by a select many, from different backgrounds and times

Within the creative brief are certain guidelines and constraints to which each film must cohere to. However, the wording of these guidelines are tailors to not prohibit creativity and personality. If you were to take on a film for this project, the film will be solely yours, as it will be produced, written and directed by you, and will depict your artistic sensibility when you showcase your stance against an undesirable future.

You can read the most recent version of the brief below. There is also a Reference Aid document available which can help you to start thinking about the practicalities of making your film:

Perfect - A Film by Abigail Martin

Filmmaker Profile: Abigail Martin (she/her)

Abigail is a 24-year-old screenwriter, script editor, and aspiring director. She has always had a passion for storytelling but realised during university that she wanted to pursue screenwriting. So far, she has written two TV pilots (one of which was an honourable mention in Finish Line Script Competition), four short films, and a feature film.

For her Mirror Self project, she wrote a script called Perfect, which depicts a glimpse into a couple’s seemingly perfect life. However, for Daniella Myers, it’s nothing like the life she wanted. With this film, Abigail wanted to illustrate an undesirable future, the stereotypical family life – a woman married and ‘settled down’ with children. Times are changing, but this life is seen as the end-goal by many and is especially forced on women. Abigail wrote in her Mirror Self Application form: “I would hate to be trapped in this life without success in my career, and for people to expect marriage and children from me just because I’m a woman”.

How can I join the Project?

Anyone can send in a film if they see themselves as a creative person. We are interested in involving a diverse group of people from different cultures and backgrounds to participate in the project. We want the project to exemplify your creative abilities and hopefully harmonies with the other creative work you have done.

If you are interested in taking the project on, you could start by contacting the project manager through the email address provided in the Creative Video Brief. Many of your questions can be answered there. If you wish to start without contacting the project manager first, that would be absolutely fine as well. When you are ready to send off your project, use the Application Form provided below and send the film and form over to the project manager.

Application Form - 24.09.2021

The Mirror Self Project is itself entirely non-profit. it aims to stimulate the minds of creatives and to help push them towards making meaningful creative work which could then be used to showcase their talents and abilities.
